Opinions On Griefing

Post by Fiberplus on Sat Mar 12, 2011 9:45 pm

So, I'm interested in all of your opinions on griefing and similar activities.

I know I'm likely going to get pissed on for mine, but I'm throwing it out there anyway.

I have a sort of neutral view on griefing. There are times when it's fantastic, and I even feel good for some communities (see about half the Gary's Mod griefing videos, and the ENTIRE game of EVE Online) and others where I feel it's detrimental to a healthy game's lifespan (such as many minecraft servers). It really depends on the kind of griefing. When you grief a server brimming with terrible, ignorant players, it's probably a good thing. When you grief a server that's filled with serious players who are quite talented/skilled, you're probably doing a disservice.

Now, I'd assume most servers with the latter type of players are often ones like ours: many game modifications in place to deter any would be griefers and active moderators and administrators who ensure griefers are put in their place, most times before they can even begin griefing. I would also assume most servers filled with the former type of players are probably not as well protected against griefers and have inactive and/or lazy moderators and administration.

You might have noticed that I said "see most Gary's Mod griefing videos". There you often see a lot of younger kids getting griefed, and in most cases I'm in favor of that kind of griefing. I'm not someone who thinks anyone who sounds like they're getting their testicles squeezed should be banned from every server in existence, but in most cases these are people who don't pay attention to rules, don't care for rules, don't have any sense of creativity or skill, and get really pissy whenever you try to give a piece of advice or criticism on something.

You also have people like this:

(Might wanna turn your volume down, he's pretty loud.)

"Hello?"

And on the note of EVE Online, a game such as that relies on griefers (note: NOT hackers or macroers, who ARE detrimental to a game like this) to keep the playerbase and in-game market healthy.

Now, one last thing I want to say: Not all griefers ARE the same. You've got people like Team Avo, who are the worst kind of griefers in both mindset and skill (trololololol). Then you've got people like those in the video above, who were probably tired of some trashtalking/offensive kid and decided to do something about it. Not all griefers are of the same blood. Some just do it to people who deserve it. Some just like to see certain people overreact, and let's face it: If you scream and cry over a video game, you probably deserve to be griefed. You're the reason WHY people do this. Griefers are like bullies you meet in every day life. They do what they do to get a reaction out of you, and if you don't give them the satisfaction of seeing your aggravation, or (in cases such as TF2 and other games where you can do this without much loss to yourself) just leave the server, they're going to be an infinitesimal problem to you.

Anyway, those are my views. How about yours? And if you don't mind, go into specifics like I did. Why do you have such views, etc.

And although I did say I'm probably going to get pissed on for my views, lets try to keep from pissing on others for theirs. Feel free to ask questions, but don't outright insult people for what they think. We all come from different walks of life, some people have been griefed a lot and probably despise all things griefer, and some people have probably delved into it somewhat and find it enjoyable. I myself have been corpse camped a few times, dealt with my fair share of purposefully useless teammates in FPSes, and even been griefed a bit on this very server. It's all about experience and personal opinion.

So, with that, let the topic begin!

It's called an opinionated essay. Either way its long and long things are good. I dont like grief so I dont like griefing at all. Sure its fun when you do it, but its damn horrible when it happens to you, like karma.

mfw that video

Seriously though; people like that are to be griefed horrendously until they gtfo. Can't stand people who take games and the internet in general THAT seriously.

The original post is truthful, though. Agreed 100%. Worth the read to anyone that skipped it.

I wrote a lot because I felt my opinion should be explained, and had you read, you would know that I asked other people to explain their opinions as well.

Seriously.
Opinion: I am subscribed to Team aVo's channel, and I think that they have awesome/funny videos. I for one, love to tune in to watch their wacky adventures in Minecraft.

Edit: Oh yeah, greifing any Source game (Garry's mod, CS:S) is the best, just due the obscene amount of rage that those srs gamers produce.

Fiber, that post is briliant. Love the work you put into it.

Griefing. I can't say I'm terribly attuned to it. I've experienced very little of it in most games, but then again, I play very few games. I'm neutral on the issue due to lack of experience.

Anyone who runs a server of any game and doesn't take measures to prevent griefing/hacking/assholery, pretty much deserves their demise. Maybe those bad experiences teach them things.

Aside from deserved lessons, I don't support griefing or hacking in online games one bit. It's only a testament to the guilty party's lack of skill or lack of beating from their dads.

If one get's lost on a server that specializes in trying to get reactions out of you, just leave, attention whoring teens looking for youtube materials are also among the not-enough-dad's-fist types.

If you tried to pull this sort of dickery in real life 20 years ago, you'd have at least gotten your ham softened good. Almost a shame internet culture brought anonymity with it~

And as a closing remark, I only get angry when playing BC2, sometimes of my own stupidity at tactical decisions and more often of my team's complete incompetence..
seriously, internet should have a mental age testings before allowed entry :/

For the most part I don't like greifing. However there are situations when it's fine, where you are taking something out that is annoying everyone on the team like that 7-year old who just won't listen, or just taking the piss out of everyone. In the end games are about having fun and if it's something hilarious, I'm not going to be SRS BSNSS man.

Case in point:

Minecraft greifing is different to most other situations because things done here actually take time and effort to do, which is beyond the capability of any 7-year old. Greifing in minecraft is just totally pathetic, end of story. If you get teamkilled in a game, you just hit respawn. Something that's taken a few hours to do however has no respawn button.

Also on BC2 - if the teams were scrambled between rounds and people would actually press the fucking Q button, it would be a LOT less frustrating sometimes. It's great when you are in a squad that top scores all the rounds but it sucks to be stuck with 3 wookies.
